The Palazzo Ducale stands opposite the Duomo, a Gothic 14th-century cathedral dedicated to St James and supported in the interior by 10 pointed cross Gothic arches. Just outside, the Museo Diocesano occupies the old Palazzo dei Canonici with its 15th-century paintings, wooden sculptures and holy furnishing taken from the church and elsewhere in the area. Its pièce di résistance is the “Botte dei Canonici” (big barrel), a vast 14th-century barrel that can hold 20,000 liters (5,000 gallons).
